Sight word practice has been a long-standing routine in many classrooms, however the Science of Reading has shifted how many think about it. Some educators now prefer focusing on phonics and decodable text, while others still see value in making sure students can recognize high-frequency words automatically. No matter which camp you lean toward, it’s hard to deny that students need repeated exposure and practice with these common words, and one of the best ways to make that practice stick is by turning it into a game.
Today I want to share one of my favorite ways to practice the very first Fry sight words: a Fry Words 1–10 Four in a Row Game. It’s simple, engaging, and comes with extras that make it a valuable tool for both classrooms and homeschool learning.
Why Fry Words 1 – 10 Matter
The Fry sight word list begins with the most common words in the English language. The first ten words like the, of, and, a, to, make up a huge percentage of what students encounter in texts. Mastery of these words is key to helping beginning readers build confidence and fluency.
Getting these first ten words down solid creates a strong foundation for success with the rest of the Fry word list.
The Challenge with Sight Word Practice
Teachers and parents know that repetition is essential. The problem? Repetition can also lead to disengagement. Kids may roll their eyes at flashcards or groan at another round of sight word drills.
That’s where games come in. Games give students a chance to practice over and over without it feeling like work. They’re motivated to play, and along the way, they’re reinforcing those high-frequency words we want them to master.
